What do others say about me?

Retired Newspaper Publisher
Hubbard Lake, Michigan
Brad Staman is a journalist, a dedicated journalist with true vision. You might say Staman has three eyes, one squarely focused on the present, one peering into the past, and one passionately looking into the future.
I had the privilege of working with Brad, he as an editor and I as a publisher. Staman was the editor of one of our weekly papers that was on a streak of being named the best weekly newspaper in the state of Nebraska. It was an easy decision when the managing editor of our daily newspaper opened up and I named Brad to the position.
Brad immediately began using his leadership skills to develop a team of journalists to help make the Star-Herald, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, into the best daily newspaper in Nebraska. It was a lofty goal, shared by both of us, but he knew we had to change to meet our expectations.
Brad built a staff long on talent, short on experience. Training was ever present in all of his daily meetings, with a heavy focus on photo and digital journalism, along with in-depth enterprise projects. Three years later, after a remarkable redesign of the printed edition and a fully complete digital edition, the Star-Herald was named best daily newspaper in the state in 2018.
Brad was relentless in his pursuit. Backed with decades of experience his leadership and vision are highly successful. I was always inspired by his work ethic, attention to detail, and his layered story-telling techniques, but mostly I was impressed with his character.
Brad is honest, the single trait most important to me. He shows compassion and discipline equally well in proper circumstances. He is an outstanding reporter, photographer and editorial writer allowing him to lead by example. He expects no more or less from himself than his team. He shares successes and treats failure as learning opportunities.
Brad Staman is a great managing editor and would be successful as a publisher as well.

Sales Manager
Nebraska Rural Radio Association
I met Brad while we worked together when we were both employed by News Media Corporation. Brad and I worked for a division of their company that was based out of eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska that was comprised of six weekly newspapers.
Brad was the publisher of the Business Farmer newspaper in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and I was general manager for the six newspapers. Brad and I worked closely on joint projects on a consistent basis.
Brad accepted the publisher’s position with the Gering Courier newspaper in Gering, Nebraska in 2000 and then shortly after I also left News Media to accept the advertising directors position with the Star-Herald in Scottsbluff, Nebraska in 2001. Berkshire Hathaway owned both of these papers at the time and recently sold to Lee Enterprises. Brad and I worked side by side on several projects and meet weekly to plan our upcoming week for products / promotions and to go over revenue generating ideas that we could possibly implement.
Brad is very energetic and his knowledge of the newspaper industry is remarkable. Ever since I have known Brad, he has been very involved with the community and offers up his time to volunteer to help anyone or any organization in need. I have always admired Brad’s writing and photography skills and the way that his workload is well organized.
It is difficult in today’s world to find someone that has the work ethics that Brad Staman brings to the table. I appreciate the time that Brad and I worked together. I learned many things from Brad that also helped me to grow personally and professionally.

Director of Tourism
City of Gering
Executive Director
Gering Visitors Bureau
With professional respect for his skills in leadership, management and community betterment. I am pleased to submit this letter of recommendation for Brad Staman. The tourism industry in our community is big business; tourism has afforded many opportunities for me to work with Brad in many capacities over the past sixteen years.
Brad has been instrumental in making things happen in the Gering community for many years. Originally, as editor/publisher of our local newspaper and respected business owner, Brad used his leadership and vision skills to help establish the Gering Merchants Association. Gering Merchants is a retail subcommittee of the Gering Visitors Bureau, and the organization serves as the primary community betterment entity in Gering. Brad served as Chairman for many terms; his strong management skills were instrumental in the early days of the organization to develop the mission statement and goals and to bring together small business owners to work together. Brad had a long tenure as Chairman of the organization, primarily because he is a person who is dedicated to seeing a project through from beginning to end.
As editor/publisher of the Gering Courier and the Star Herald, Brad has been instrumental in telling the stories of the importance of tourism as a primary economic driver in the Gering community. He has a good understanding of tourism and has always been committed to using his media to make sure residents and businesses are active participants in the recreation and attraction amenities in their own back yard while gaining a clear understanding of tourism’s importance to quality of life in our community and region.
In recent years, Gering embarked on our Downtown Revitalization efforts to undertake a massive multi-year project to improve the downtown and heart of our community. Brad stepped up to lead the efforts and committee responsible for moving this project forward. Facilitating public-private partnerships and having the vision for our community’s future, Brad’s efforts helped Gering meet the challenges associated with downtown revitalization and to attain our successes.
If you are seeking a person who is dedicated, experienced and committed to his community, Brad Staman should be given your strongest consideration.

Editor
Endeavor Business Media
My name is Lauren Brant and I am proud to offer my recommendation of Brad Staman to whom I have personally known for 2 years.
I was a reporter and weekly newspaper editor for almost two years at the Scottsbluff Star-Herald and Gering Courier. During my time there, Mr. Staman was my direct supervisor. The purpose of this recommendation is to commend Mr. Staman for the way he interacts with his employees and what actions he takes to encourage his team’s success.
As a reporter working in an ever-evolving industry from print to digital, I was impressed with Mr. Staman’s innovative ideas to capture our readers’ attention from creating podcasts and videos to writing in-depth articles, supported by strong photography. He is always willing to brainstorm ideas and open to new perspectives on news topics that impact the community. His open-door policy also makes him accessible to his team. As the leader of the editorial department, Mr. Staman fostered an atmosphere for growth, allowing his reporters to develop their journalistic and leadership skills by instilling self-accountability and opportunities for community outreach as he pushed us to become the best versions of ourselves. Mr. Staman is willing to put in the extra time and effort to ensure a quality product for our readers that is not only accurate, but also highlights his team members’ skills.
I have been promoted to a weekly editor and digital content coordinator because of my passion for journalism. I attribute my success to Mr. Staman, who helped me develop my photography, design and leadership skills beyond what I learned in college.

Academic Advisor/Instructor
Northeast Community College
Brad approached me with the opportunity to work as a reporter for the Gering Courier and joining his team was the best decisions I made as he took me from a weekly columnist to a reporter, photographer, and even page designer. He encouraged me to try everything from news to feature to sports and whatever help I needed, he was always there to offer support. Although he was the editor, he never made me feel like he was too busy or was above helping me. He would schedule meetings with me to learn new skills, sit with me as a practiced, and offered advice to improve.
During our weekly meetings, he would always ask me what stories I wanted to write that week, which encouraged me to always think through a journalistic lens and not depend on a manager telling me what to do. The autonomy he gave me pushed me to produce quality content. Because he treated me like I was more than just a high school student, I wanted to prove I could work on a higher level. I’ve taken many lessons from Brad into my own leadership style.
Brad is well known as being a great photographer and writer in the community, but I think many would be happy to know that he’s also a fantastic leader to work for. His passion for journalism ignites the passion in those he works with and for that reason, he continues to push the boundaries and lead award-winning teams.

For the more than 10 years I spent managing the Star-Herald and the Gering Courier, I worked with Brad. I found him to be a very productive and collaborative manager and editor for the Courier. He managed himself and his direct reports with little need for direction from me. It is my understanding that he continued this as he took the reins of editor for the Star-Herald.
He has very solid news judgement and understands the business side of the business.
I also found him to be a very trustworthy person.
